St. Giles School in Retford has become the first to pilot a SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) version of the Prince's Trust Team programme, offering young people an opportunity to develop essential life skills, build confidence, and engage with their local community. This innovative project delivered by the Inspire and Achieve Foundation (IAF), Nottinghamshire’s trusted delivery partner of the Team programme, has the potential to inspire similar initiatives across the country, creating meaningful opportunities for more young people with SEND to thrive.
Over the course of the programme, participants from St. Giles School engaged in a variety of activities, from scaling climbing walls during teambuilding to fundraising for and completing a community project at Goodwin Hall gardens. These practical, hands-on experiences helped students bond as a team, boost confidence in their abilities, and work through personal challenges in a supported and inclusive environment.
“The Team programme in Retford has been an exciting project for IAF to pilot in what has been a national first for the Prince’s Trust in terms of differentiated and adaptive Team provision” said Pippa Carter, Director at IAF. “Through projects such as this pilot, and our other core support services, we want to ensure all young people have equitable access to opportunity and feel empowered to achieve their best”
The success of the programme is celebrated not only through the personal speeches of young participants but also reflected in the course feedback. 81% of those who took part felt their confidence had improved demonstrating how inclusive, experiential learning can impact young people positively. By continuing to explore projects like this, the Inspire and Achieve Foundation hopes to work together with more schools, communities groups and local employers to ensure all young people can benefit from enriching opportunities in Nottinghamshire. Speaking on their experience of the programme, one student beamed, “I really enjoyed the Prince's Trust Team programme and l would recommend it to anyone who was thinking about doing it!”
