As part of the Prince’s Trust Team Programme, two groups of young individuals selected the local charity, Hetty's, who provide confidential support, enabling families to recover from the effects of their loved ones drug/alcohol for their community project. During their time at Burnaby House, they diligently worked to transform the garden into a serene and inviting space for both staff and service users. In June of the previous year, Team 3 initiated the project by clearing rubble and brambles from the garden's end, creating space for new decking. They also constructed a raised planter, which Hetty’s now utilizes as a memory garden. Additionally, they created pallet planters and garden poppies from recycled plastic, enhancing the garden with a sense of remembrance.
This year, the project was entrusted to Team 6, who selected Hetty's as their community project. They faced the challenge of adding a pond to the garden and promptly began their work. After clearing numerous roots, they excavated the area, installed a pond liner, and arranged rocks to form the pond. Using funds raised from their fundraising activities, Team 6 purchased pond plants and accessories to complete the project. Additionally, during their time at Hetty's, Team 6 constructed two more pallet planters, repainted existing furniture, and assisted in decorating some of the rooms inside the building. Both teams successfully completed their projects thanks to the generosity of local businesses, which donated tombola prizes, and the support of the general public, who contributed during their bake sale and tombola.
“Thank you to this amazing team of young people, from The Princes Trust for picking Hetty’s as their community project. Guided and mentored by Mark, Sharon and Sophie they have worked tirelessly this last two weeks, clearing Hetty's courtyard area ready for us to build our new shed. They have stained our decking, painted the garden furniture, created wall planters, hedgehog houses, painted inside the building during bad weather and have designed and dug a fabulous wildlife pond. I cannot begin to thank you all enough for the pleasure it will bring to so many of Hetty’s families."
